He had just finished his last cup of coffee when he heard his phone ping. He immediately set his cup down and grabbed his phone, knowing that his mother had finally responded to his text. He sat back with Alina, allowing her to view the screen while he read his mother’s text message. But when he read it, his heart sank. “How could you send me this?” She read the first text while typing the second.

Joe Kruger had the ideal life growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. Life was simple for him and his mother, Mari, and father, Austin. But all changed after he received his mechanical engineering degree.
