“Hi Mom, I wanted to put you in touch with someone. My girlfriend’s name is Alina. I’m excited for you to meet her. “I adore you,” He was typing on his phone. He took a deep breath and sent the text along with the photo. All he could do now was wait. Alina giggled uncomfortably, not knowing what to expect when the elder woman viewed the photograph.

The couple remained sat on the couch for the next half hour. They were having coffee and enjoying each other’s company while waiting for Joe’s mum to respond. Joe planned to fly himself and Alina to meet his mother for Christmas if everything went well. He’d met Alina’s family before, and he adored them almost as much as he adored her. But he had no idea that one feature in the photograph would irritate his mum.
