She informed the interviewer that she did not believe “people would want [her] to be queen.” She then emphasized that when she said “people,” she meant “the establishment” into which she had married. Diana was a misfit at the Royal Palace. When she wore the black sheep sweater in 1983, it was seen as a statement that she felt like the black sheep of the family, which was understandable.
