Living The Life In San Diego
Welch graduated from high school in 1958, the year her parents divorced. Welch, on the other hand, pursued an acting career and enrolled at San Diego State College to study theater arts. She married her high school sweetheart, James Welch, a year later, in 1959. Welch appeared in several local theatrical shows before discontinuing her theatre classes. She left her spouse and went to work as a weather forecaster for a local San Diego TV station.
Waitressing in Dallas
Raquel Welch had two children at the time and relocated to Dallas, where she worked as a cocktail waitress and model. She then picked herself up and returned to Los Angeles in 1963. When Welch met Hollywood agent Patrick Curtis, she began applying for film parts. Curtis became Welch’s manager, and the two planned to make her a Hollywood icon. They decided to preserve Welch’s married name so she wouldn’t be cast primarily in Latina parts.
