This was her last chance… Part of her hoped it had nothing to do with Timo putting pencils in his ears. However, the doctor would discover a quite different answer. Something she hadn’t seen in her entire career…

The nurse had just been in the room for about fifteen minutes when she hastily excused herself and walked out without saying anything to Timothy. During this time, Teresa was left to speculate about what the nurse might have discovered, while Timo was left to sit there blankly staring into oblivion.

Teresa tensed up as the worried-looking nurse went back into the room, this time with a doctor in tow, and Teresa could hardly keep her nerves under control. When she finished, the doctor placed a loving palm on the boy’s head and began to explain what she had seen during her own quick examination of him.

Teresa couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Initially, she assumed it was a piece of pencil that had become trapped in Timo’s ear, which she had suspected for quite some time. It’s possible that there is a buildup of wax. She could never have foreseen the exact reason of the incident. But what exactly had the doctor discovered, and why was it such a major source of concern? Were there any signs that Timo would be alright?

Several months previously, shortly after Timo turned nine, the incident had begun. Teresa became concerned when she observed that he was reacting to her less and less frequently as time went on. At first, she assumed he was simply transitioning into a period in which he was neglecting her more. Things, on the other hand, just got worse.

He only responded when Teresa tapped him on the shoulder, which was a rare occurrence.

Teresa wants to be more rigorous with her son about his gaming time, especially given the fact that he was still so young. She was concerned that his passion would develop into a gaming addiction, or at the very least make it even more difficult for him to interact with children his own age. Timothy had not had the simplest of starts to life, despite the best attempts on her part. Teresa’s friendship with Timo’s father, Bjorn, was a major factor in this development. Despite the fact that she had loved Bjorn, things had begun to fall apart between them long before Timothy was born. Timo had been born as a result of unintentional pregnancy, and Bjorn did not want to parent the child because he felt he was not ready.

Teresa, on the other hand, had always desired children, even if they did not arrive in the manner she had anticipated. So she pushed forward with the pregnancy, persuading Bjorn that they would be able to handle the responsibilities of being parents. Bjorn, on the other hand, grew resentful, gradually and bitterly, until Timo was about two years old. Teresa and Bjorn’s relationship had already been irreparably damaged by that point. The pair decided to part ways.

Bjorn, on the other hand, had never been particularly close to Timo, even when he was still alive. Except if Teresa asked him to, he would not assist her in any way. Teresa began to notice it in everything she encountered. It seemed as though Timo was always listening in on the microphone through the headset. Teresa wasn’t the only one who had noticed it until now.

When Timothy’s schoolteachers became aware of his developing difficulties in class, they began to contact Teresa for assistance. They were initially concerned that he was preoccupied or disobeying orders, but as time went on, they became more concerned. Timo’s English instructor, in particular, expressed concern to Teresa about the possibility that he was losing his hearing. She also had an interesting notion about why this was happening…

When Teresa informed the teacher that she and Timothy were both concerned about Timothy’s apparent hearing loss, the teacher responded with an unexpected explanation. She had apparently discovered that Timo was constantly sticking pens and pencils into his ears, and she had informed him of this. Perhaps this had resulted in more serious consequences? Or perhaps a piece had become caught or something along those lines?

Teresa’s reaction to the teacher’s notion drove her over the line from worry to complete terror. Her initial assumption had been that there was a problem with her attitude, but it had become abundantly evident that there was something wrong. She needed to figure out what was wrong with Timo’s ears as soon as possible. Teresa, on the other hand, was well aware that in order to do so, she would need to take Timo to the doctor. Something she had been attempting to avoid for quite some time…

Because Teresa found going to the doctor to be a difficult experience. Despite the fact that she couldn’t afford medical insurance for herself, she understood that Timothy was still officially covered by her ex-boyfriend, Bjornmedical ,’s plan. He would, however, be required to give his approval for any payments that would be declared. Teresa had wanted to come off of this plan for a time, but she had convinced herself that she would only stay on it in the event of an emergency involving Timothy. Was this truly an emergency situation that which she was willing to risk Bjorn’s wrath?

Teresa realized she had only one option at this point: contact Bjorn. She knew she couldn’t wait any longer. She hoped that by explaining her situation and asking if she could have Timothy’s hearing tested, he would agree. After all, she hadn’t asked him for anything else in all of these years, so why not now? Bjorn didn’t answer her phone calls the first few times she called. It was evident that he didn’t want to speak with her, but at least Teresa was aware that her ex-husband had retained the same phone number thanks to a voicemail message.

Teresa, on the other hand, was not about to give up, not when Timothy needed this appointment. After five failed attempts to reach Bjorn, he finally picked up the phone. Teresa was greeted with an enraged “What do you want?!” but she managed to keep her nerves under control and keep her cool. She had no choice but to make this work. Timothy had now begun to complain of earache, which he had not before experienced. Teresa realized he needed to visit a doctor as soon as possible, and she knew she could only do that with Bjorn’s assistance.

Despite his first outburst, Bjorn gave Teresa the opportunity to express herself. In order to inform Timothy of the gradual loss of his hearing, Teresa informed him as rapidly as she could about the developing pains he was experiencing. She explained to Bjorn that she was unable to pay for the insurance or expenses on her own and pleaded with him to allow her to use Bjorn’s insurance to care for his son.

For a brief moment, there was silence on the other end of the phone line. Although it was probably only a handful of seconds, it felt like it was hours to Teresa. Her heart hammered in her throat, and she wondered aloud if Bjorn had disconnected the phone call. Would he really go to such lengths? When it was his own son who was in trouble? It’s reasonable to assume that, even if he didn’t want anything to do with Timo, he would want to ensure that his flesh and blood were not in any discomfort. Bjorn finally responded with a response.

Teresa was on the verge of collapsing from relief when Bjorn informed her that she could use his insurance to cover Timothy’s appointment. It was Bjorn’s subsequent statement that she couldn’t believe, indicating that if anything went wrong, he would reimburse her for whatever Timo required. Teresa felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted off her shoulders, and she thanked Bjorn repeatedly. His response was dismissive, acknowledging that it was the least he could do after having failed miserably in his role as a father for so long.

She picked up the phone, dreading the prospect of being disappointed, and answered it cautiously. Bjorn was composed on the other side, perhaps even a little reserved. “Can you tell me if you and Timo needed a ride to the doctor’s office tomorrow?” “If that’s all right with you.” Teresa couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Prior to this, he had never proposed something so… unselfish.

Teresa agreed to go because they had no other option than to take the bus to go to their destination. Despite his generosity, she remained doubtful. Bjorn wasn’t a generous person, and he hadn’t made even the slightest attempt to become a part of Timo’s life before to this point. She couldn’t rule out the possibility that Timo’s discomfort had triggered something in him, but she couldn’t be certain. The only thing she could do now was to wait and see if he would actually show up.

Teresa had half-expected Bjorn to simply not show up or phone, so she wanted to be prepared in case they had to take the bus to their destination. After an hour had gone, there was still no sign of Bjorn on the horizon. He hadn’t even picked up the phone or sent a text. Theresa thought that was typical. Without a certain, he’d disappoint them!

There were three knocks on the door at the same time, just as Teresa was about to give up all hope. She dashed over to the door and was greeted by a flushed-looking Bjorn, who stood at the threshold. He apologized uncomfortably, explaining that his alarm hadn’t gone off and that he had rushed over here as fast as he could to make up for it. Teresa took a quick glance at the time on her phone. Indeed, he arrived just on schedule.

Even though the car ride to the doctor’s office was completely silent, it was to be expected. Bjorn had barely spent any time with his son, and he didn’t know how to act in the role of a father in this particular circumstance. Timo alternated between staring blankly out the window and looking down at his twitching feet. He was bored. Things were looking more and more like they were going to be really uncomfortable during the entire process.

Bjorn appeared to be out of place at the office, which was obvious to everyone. During a routine query from the receptionist, Bjorn glanced across at Teresa, who answered the question and every subsequent one with ease. She couldn’t help but take note of Bjorn’s dejected expression. He appeared to be ashamed of the fact that he did not know such basic information about his son.

A short while later, they were summoned back to the examination room, and Teresa was on the verge of telling Bjorn to remain in the waiting room, but she stopped herself. Remember, he was Timo’s father in the first place, and learning about his health issues would help him realize that life was too short for him to be such an absent father. They followed the nurse inside the room, Timo shuffled his feet, attempting to make the journey seem longer than it was.

It was evident that Timo was dissatisfied. All he wanted to do was bring his headphones with him, but his mother had been attempting to limit his time spent with them. He was frustrated. They were not the source of his hearing problems, but she did not want to make things worse by being around him more often. He was quite distressed by the entire thing. Because he didn’t know Bjorn all that well, the fact that he had shown there made him even more afraid of the situation.

After the nurse had completed her initial examination of Timo, the doctor entered the room and swiftly introduced himself to the parents. He acknowledged that he had a large number of patients to visit today and that the only reason he was able to squeeze Timo into his schedule so quickly was due to the severity of his hearing loss, which he explained to Timo. Bjorn let out a small gasp when he heard this revelation. He didn’t realize the situation was so serious.

Timo admitted that he wasn’t — he had never felt that his ear was causing him any problems in the first place. Just wanting the whole thing to be done with, he reasoned that the less noise he made about it, the sooner he would be free to leave. He was right. While taking a closer look at the inside of Timo’s ears, the doctor’s brows furrowed in concentration. Teresa felt a lump forming in the back of her throat. What might this possibly mean?

Looking back over his shoulder at Timo’s parents, the doctor sighed. “This side of his ear appears to be considerably different from the opposite side. According to the doctors, Timothy’s continual poking and prodding appear to have resulted in some pretty substantial inflammation in his eardrum. Bjorn ducked his head, attempting to conceal his identity from the others. Teresa couldn’t tell for sure, but it appeared that he was embarrassed for some reason, which she couldn’t understand.

Teresa was at a loss for words. “So… so, what exactly does this mean?…” What happened to cause him to lose that portion of his ear? “He’s just a kid!” you say. The doctor went on to explain that Timo would not be able to just remove that portion of his eardrum on his own. He would have needed to have suffered serious trauma to the area, and either Timo or Teresa would have been able to detect such an injury without difficulty.

Teresa was baffled as to why Bjorn was still avoiding her eyes, and she couldn’t figure it out. Were you concerned about the fact that their son was suffering from a medical condition that was clearly out of the ordinary? Teresa had never considered the possibility of such a thing before.

In reality, it isn’t even a physical injury. “This is a medical condition, and while it is rare, it is almost certainly genetic in nature.” Teresa couldn’t believe her ears when she heard what she was hearing. There had been no one else in her family who had experienced this problem, and no physician had ever brought up such a topic before! She turned to gaze at Bjorn, who gulped apprehensively. He appeared to be thinking about something.

“Ah, man. I’m sorry. “I was aware that this was a possibility,” Bjorn whispered, giving Timo a dejected expression. Teresa looked at Bjorn with a sour expression. In the event that there was something he wasn’t telling them, now was the time for him to come forward. Teresa requested him to elaborate carefully, as she tried not to shout at him. It took him a while to summon the nerve to speak, but he eventually managed to get the words out.

In Bjorn’s family, this type of birth deformity was very prevalent, according to him. Although his father and his father’s uncle were both infected with it, Bjorn was confident that Timo would be safe because neither of his brothers had acquired the disease. Unfortunately, this was just not the case. It was explained to Bjorn and Teresa by the doctor that if they had taken care of the problem years earlier, Timo’s hearing would not have degraded to such an extent.

This wasn’t precisely something you should have kept hidden from the mother of his child, but it was necessary. The fact that it had taken him this long to inform her was beyond her comprehension. As she tried to calm herself down, she shouted out, “Bjorn, why didn’t you bring this up before?”

For a brief while, Bjorn was dumbfounded, but he quickly recovered and proceeded to explain himself. With all of his efforts to avoid the subject for all these years, he had sincerely believed that perhaps he would never be forced to confront it, and thus that he would never truly suffer from the consequences of abandoning Timo any more than he already did. The doctor cleared his throat, suggesting to the two of them to postpone their talk until a more private moment was available.

“Fortunately, I have some good news,” the doctor added, attempting to lighten the atmosphere in the room with his words. “With a round of surgery, we can resolve this problem, and the recovery period is relatively short.” Timo will not be absent from school for any significant period of time.” Even in the face of the shocking news, this was a welcome respite. Timo would be all right!

The ride back to the house was just as quiet as the one there, but this time it wasn’t because of an uneasy tension amongst the passengers. Teresa was keeping her rage reserved for when Timo was no longer in earshot. As they neared the house, Teresa instructed Timo to proceed directly to his room and that she would be there shortly after him. Timo dashed into the house, and Teresa turned to face Bjorn, who was getting ready to unload.

But, just as she was about to deliver the verbal thrashing of a lifetime, she noticed Bjorn’s eyes were welling up with tears. She’d never gotten a reaction like that from him before, not even when Timo was born. She couldn’t figure out why he was showing it now, but it made her soften a little.

Bjorn broke down in tears, explaining that he was having a difficult time coping with his decision to remain absent from his son’s life. In the years since Teresa’s death, he had been in no permanent relationship and had not fathered any other children, so there was no genuine opportunity for him to start over from the beginning. He’d been wanting to make things right with them for quite some time, but he couldn’t bring himself to pick up the phone and call them back.

Teresa wasn’t the kind to feel much pity for Bjorn, but she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy in her heart for him. He was certainly as bad as they come, yet it appeared as though he had paid a significant karmic price in a very public manner. Teresa was able to express her regret to Bjorn after a little period of reflection. Bjorn’s cheeks were flushed with relief as he realized what had happened.

After that, the two of them talked for a while longer while still sitting in the car to avoid having a conversation with Timo. Bjorn vowed that he would cover the entire cost of the surgery and that he would even contact his father to inquire about how his other family members had dealt with the condition in the past. It had been his goal to start a new chapter in his life with Timo and Teresa, and this was an excellent opportunity to do so.

In preparation for Timo’s surgery, Bjorn took up the two once more, this time setting many alarms in case he failed to remember to set a single one of them. Fortunately, the treatment went smoothly, and the surgeon assured Teresa that it was highly likely that Timo would restore his entire sense of hearing after the procedure. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. It seemed like Timo’s life was finally getting back to normal.

Nobody expected Bjorn to stay around for the long haul once Timo’s operation was over, but he paid frequent visits to the young child while he was recovering, bringing him modest gifts and sweets along with him to keep him company. Teresa was well aware that her and Bjorn’s days as a couple were finished, but the one between Bjorn and Timo had only recently begun to take shape.
