Don’t Blink or You Might Miss It!
OH MY GOD… doesn’t see someone in this situation make you feel a little uncomfortable?! This type of situation is fortunately made easier by the fact that years and years of training have become virtually instinctual. This photograph was shot during the final of the Women’s Individual All-Around Gymnastics competition at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Despite the fact that Romanian athlete Larisa Iordache appears to be on the verge of falling off of this beam, she was able to maintain her balance because of her skill, practice, and talent. We’re sure the audience breathed a sigh of relief when she was able to restore her balance and complete the dance. Phew!
The Unbalanced Beam
Some athletes at the Olympic games may have chalk on their hands, which you can see here. During a performance, the chalk is utilized to help an athlete maintain a firm hold on a bar, beam, or pole that is being used. Chalk can be helpful in some situations and in others it is not. In the instance of Jennifer Pinches (how ironic that she has a last name that begins with the letter Pinches), it appears that the chalk has gotten wet. She was attempting to hold on to victory as she was competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but it just occurred to slip through her fingers. Perhaps a bit more chalk and a little less perspiration will suffice the next time around?
