Unexpected Meeting
Thomas went out with some of his classmates a few months into his second year of medical school to unwind after a particularly grueling exam. When he arrived, he was seated next to a stunning woman named Madeline. They talked the entire evening, and Thomas requested for her phone number at the conclusion. When he asked the same woman to marry him a year later, he felt like everything was finally going right in his life. Perhaps this was the ideal opportunity to reconnect with his family. Thomas dialed the number and hoped for the best.

Thomas held his breath as his father answered the phone. He hadn’t anticipated hearing his father’s voice. “This is me, Dad. “I’m getting married soon, and I’d love for you and Zach to be there,” he remarked excitedly. On the other end, there was stillness. Then his father said something that broke his heart. “I apologize, but I only have one son.” Stop phoning us since you’ve already destroyed our hearts.” The line then clicked. He couldn’t believe what he’d just heard, and the same numbness he’d felt with his mother began to return. Thomas convinced himself that he now had no family and refocused on his love and his education.
