Patty Duke was formerly a great stage presence as well as a film and television actor, which you might not realize. The young actor portrayed Helen Keller on Broadway in the show The Miracle Worker from 1959 to 1961. It wasn’t the last time Duke took on the character of Helen, the young blind, deaf, and silent girl. In 1962, she played Helen in the Arthur Penn-directed film The Miracle Worker, in which she reprised her role. For her role as Keller, Duke was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
