Maintenance And Care
Researchers had to consider how each submarine’s maintenance schedule would affect the boat’s readiness to embark on a mission when assessing how many submarines the US Navy would need to buy. They also needed to determine how many missiles needed to be on the sea and at the station at any one time. To save money, research on various design and construction possibilities were done.
Additions
Some ideas were investigated before deciding to develop an altogether new replacement submarine design, such as adding missile tubes to the Virginia-class attack submarine or manufacturing Ohio-class submarines utilizing updated Ohio-class designs. Following an examination of these alternatives, it was determined that a new design would be the most cost-effective answer while meeting all of the Navy’s technical requirements.
