What Else There Is To Know
The new SSBN-X Columbia-class submarine was previously known as the Ohio Replacement Submarine, but it now has its own name and, as previously stated, is a forthcoming class of nuclear submarines for the United States Navy. This behemoth of a submarine will replace the UGM-133 Trident II-armed Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. The remaining vessels will be retired.
Saying Goodbye
Each year beginning in 2027, one of these submarines will be decommissioned. Following that, the Columbia class will be in charge of the US strategic nuclear force’s submarine presence. The US Navy plans to purchase 12 of the new submarines. Each of these submarines will be outfitted with 16 missile tubes, each capable of carrying a single Trident II D5LE missile. Other considerations must be addressed when creating a submarine, such as this one.
