The Start Of Something Big

Nadia Comăneci was born in the summer of 1961, in the Romanian town of Onesti. She was only 10 when her parents divorced and she stayed with her mother, Stefania. She was a lively kid from the start. Stefania said in an interview that she put Nadia in gymnastics classes because she was so active. Nadia became enamored with the activity and began to take advantage of any free time she had to practice. As she continued to improve, Stefania began to recognize her daughter’s exceptional potential and knew that she was destined for greatness. But no one could have guessed how great she would actually become.

As she continued to hone her skills, her enthusiasm for the sport grew, and she eventually parlayed a casual interest as a child into a successful professional career. Unlike the majority of people, Nadia knew her calling the moment she did her first cartwheel.
