It was very important for them to take it slowly while they moved towards it through the icy waters. The boat can get damaged by a single chunk of ice below it. It can even capsize and leave the trio stranded. They were trying to help the animal, not join it. They made sure to stay alert while during the rescue mission they were carrying out.
