After all, manufacturers had discovered by the end of the 19th century, that the water flowing over the falls had a value all of its own. They could, in fact, use the torrent’s energy to power their factories and mills if they knew how to harness it. As a result, in 1895, a hydroelectric generating station – the world’s first significant facility of its sort – was built in the region, becoming the world’s first large facility of its kind.
