Krill was intrigued by the marking that he had discovered and took a photograph of it, which he subsequently forwarded to Rowland, a paleontologist at the University of Nevada. After examining the photograph, the American researcher was able to confirm what his colleague had suspected: the patterns were in fact fossilized footprints from thousands of years ago. It wasn’t until two years later that the incredible discovery was made public at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

However, it would be another couple of years before the full extent of Krill’s ground-breaking finding was fully released to the public. Rowland and his colleagues Zachary Jensen and Mario Caputo published a study in the scientific journal PLOS ONE on August 19, 2020, which was co-authored by Rowland. In addition, the group examined fossilized trackways from the Grand Canyon – including the discovery of the Bright Angel Trail – as part of their work.
