Her tenant Michael Tell suggested that they pretend to be in a relationship to distract the press, despite the fact that they were almost strangers. He told Patty that if they pretended to be dating, reporters would leave her alone, allowing her to date whomever she wanted. Michael not only suggested that they pretend to be in a relationship, but he also persuaded Patty to marry him in order to make it look real. She went along with it, for better or worse. In 1970, the couple married for only 13 days before deciding to get an annulment.

Patty Duke ended up dating another actor after her first relationship with a celebrity didn’t work out. Patty began dating John Astin, an actor known for his role on The Addams Family, after her brief publicity stunt marriage with Michael Tell. Suzanne Hahn, John’s first wife, was still legally married at the time. When Patty found out she was pregnant, this caused some issues. In February 1971, the couple welcomed their first child, Sean, with the certainty that John was the father. Patty and John married two years later.
