Edge Of Disaster
During the filming of “The Last Samurai,” Cruise narrowly avoided serious harm (or death) when a sword was swung within an inch of his neck! The close incident was caused by a malfunctioning safety machine. Hiroyuki Sanada, Cruise’s co-star, was able to prevent the blade from striking the Hollywood star’s neck. What a spontaneous moment!
Front And Center
In the film, “Taps,” Cruise was originally only scheduled to portray a minor part. Nonetheless, director Harold Becker was so impressed with Cruise’s performance as a military student during rehearsals that he offered him the role of David Shawn. This shift in casting mirrored the actor’s ability to stand out on set and helped him propel his career forward.
