J.J. Abrams wanted both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner to appear in his reboot. Shatner, on the other hand, was overbearing and demanded that the majority of the picture be devoted to him. Abrams was well aware that this would not work, so he fired him. Shatner was dissatisfied… at least until the premiere. He was a big fan of Chris Pine’s portrayal of Captain Kirk.

Despite the fact that Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a financial success, the story line was unclear and too intricate for both audiences and critics. As a result, Paramount pushed Rodenberry to limit his role to that of a consultant in name only. In other words, they effectively shut off his ability to innovate and allowed him little to no creative freedom.
