He had to portray a Klingon in “Apocalypse Rising,” which was the other film in which he appeared. His collection of prostheses was so extensive that he even had to visit a dentist in order to have the mouthpieces and teeth fitted. He genuinely didn’t want to, but the studio made him do it because they couldn’t say no. Observers will notice that the discomfort he is displaying is not simply the character’s distaste to suddenly becoming a Klingon, but also the actor’s aversion to being forced to wear Klingon makeup.

The Klingons have undergone significant transformations from season to season and series to series throughout the series. At first, it was only a matter of budget constraints (thus the smooth foreheads), but as ridges and other features were added to their frightening countenance over time, the writers took the easy as out and claimed that it was simply a “mutation” that caused the changes. “It’s something we don’t talk about,” Warf adds in one of the episodes.
