The Catacombs of Paris Have a Secret Underground Theater

Location: Paris, France
Year Discovered: 2004
Est. Value: $5,000-$10,000* (Cost To Build)

The Paris Catacombs are a maze in the center of France. When the city required a better place to house the dead, the Catacombs were erected. So, beginning in the late 1700s, Paris picked tunnels five floors beneath into which they unloaded bodies. This discovery is even more creepy because of the context. In August 2004, Parisian police officers conducting a training exercise uncovered a fully-equipped movie theater in one of the Catacombs’ previously unknown caves. Terraces were dug into the rock to create an amphitheater, which housed projection equipment, a full-sized movie screen, and a selection of thriller and noir films. The films were neither inappropriate nor prohibited; it appears that someone simply desired to set up their own eerie, private theater.
