Ruth Hana’s early years were everything but carefree. The 91-year-old experienced many hardships as a child and frequently felt lonely. But she was grateful for those trying times because they made her the person she was today. She was searching through millions of metal fragments with a single goal in mind.

She had performed this action before. People in the community recognized her as the person who formerly rummaged through garbage cans. People’s responses to her were diverse, ranging from disgust to recognizing her and carrying on with their day. Ruth didn’t mind what they thought. However, a fresh problem has emerged lately.

She was not bothered by the increased attention, but she was bothered by the disapproving looks that went along with it. Her blood immediately begins to boil whenever someone says, “You’re too old to be doing anything like this.” She was irritated because, although being older, she did not want to be restricted to her tiny chamber. She was aware that she deserved better.

She found it difficult to make the shift from her lovely home to a retirement community. There was nothing to be upset about and she was treated fairly nicely in the home. Even if the staff does allow a lot of her actions to go unpunished, she just missed having her freedom. She was appreciative of that, especially in light of what she was doing at the time to pass the time with the pop tabs.

Her room was crammed to the gills with cartons, bags, and jugs. Ruth was constantly looking for cans so that she could tear the tabs off of them. She would sit down and count her daily allowance repeatedly every day. Nobody was aware of her motivation, but they would soon learn.

Ruth added the final tab to her collection as the entire community and staff gathered in front of her room. Everyone applauded Ruth. Even those who had harsh opinions of what she was doing joined in. Everyone was eager to learn the purpose of this entire situation.

Ruth put on her favorite coat and brand-new shoes while grinning. She requested assistance from the personnel loading her containers into the bus. They could all breathe easier knowing that her clutter would soon be gone. She gave the bus driver an address, and two staff members escorted her.

The bus was parked in front of a sizable structure. Ruth was aware that she was anticipated as people flooded out the front door, though. The confused looks on the staff’s faces were funny. A man in a pricey suit appeared and smiled cheerily.

Ruth had the “final laugh” after the truth was revealed, despite the fact that she would never truly laugh at them in real life. But suddenly, she was viewed differently by everyone in the house. The aluminum pop tabs, which aren’t particularly significant on their own, are collected by the Ronald McDonald Charity House. However, when they are all combined, they represent a sizable charitable contribution. Any ring tab from a can of soup, soda, or pet food is given to a local recycler, who subsequently sells the precious aluminum to make money for the nonprofit. Why only the tabs, though?

Can ring tags are far more hygienic than complete cans and are much easier to store and discard. The worth of the tabs is calculated after they have been loaded up and weighed in order to collect a big number of tabs. The charity then receives a cheque from the recycling center to cover operating expenses.

“They operate totally on volunteers and donations and when you look at what Ronald McDonald House does, it makes you look beyond yourself to help somebody else,” a fellow resident stated. “It is giving her something to do. She feels like she is contributing and it is important for an older person to have a purpose in life — a reason. It is important as you get older to look beyond yourself.”

Ruth is the reason the nursing home as a whole is also collecting pop tabs for charity. “I’m sort of amazed at how these tabs have taken off,” a staff member stated. “It has gone out into the community and I’m just tickled that Ruth has gotten into this. It has given her something to do and made her feel useful.”

Ruth is still going strong after collecting more than a million pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. She enters dumpsters whenever she sees them and digs through the trash to save what she can. Since then, her tale has gained popularity on Facebook and Reddit as she raises awareness of the plight of children and what anyone can do to assist them.

For the past 20 years, Shelby resident Aletha Buck, 96, has been gathering pop tabs for The Ronald McDonald House. She does this to assist the facility in paying its operating expenses for the patients they assist in hospitals. Her goal started back in 1995. “When you see the kids here, it does something to you,” she remarked. How many cans has Aletha gathered, then?

She has amassed an astounding number of 10 million pop tabs in the 20 years she has been collecting them! “People were staying at The Ronald McDonald House and we always heard them talk about so many people who just needed some help,” She informed the press. How did she accomplish it?

People have learned about what she’s doing for The Ronald McDonald House throughout the course of the 20 years that she’s been collecting. People in the neighborhood and even overseas started sending her all the pop tabs they had accumulated in the mail. Aletha says that she almost everyday receives pop tabs in the mail, which is why she keeps track of how many she has.

“I just got more excited when I got more tabs and started counting them,” Aletha said. “And I thought, ‘well, you know, that might be alright to count them just to see how many we can get.’” She had no idea that she would be collecting them for the following 20 years! She quickly became aware of how much she was assisting the nonprofit, and she set a target of 10 million tabs, which she achieved in 2021.
