Nadya married Marcos Gutierrez in 1996, the same year she graduated from Mt. San Antonio College with her mental technician license. She also began working at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California, a mental facility. It was a gratifying work, but it was difficult and dangerous. Nadya Suleman was working in a psychiatric facility on September 18th, 1999, when she got caught in the middle of a tragic occurrence. A brawl broke out at the facility due to the presence of twenty patients, and Nadya attempted to interfere immediately away. One of the female patients, unfortunately, flung a wooden desk into the air, hitting on Nadya’s back and causing her ruptured disc injury. Workers’ compensation was given to Nadya for $170,000, but the money only helped her get by for a short time and was the least of her difficulties.
