Nadia, then only 14 years old, competed in the American Cup at Madison Square Garden a few months before the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. She came away with a silver medal from the competition, but more importantly, she won the affection of 18-year-old American gymnast Bart Conner. The media pressured the young American to kiss Nadia when he and Nadia went to the podium to accept their medals. Both were happy to help, and they hit it off right away.
