Egyptians believed that enemas had a spiritual significance. In their story, the god Thoth is said to have invented enemas and subsequently shared this sacred knowledge with the rest of the world. Thoth appears to be a decent individual.

For example, one method involved slathering a woman’s entire body in oil and allowing her to rest for the night. If she appeared to be in good shape the next morning, she was good to travel. And if she wasn’t, it was because she hadn’t conceived yet.
