Before the episode is taped, there are rehearsals. Ellen usually practices her opening monologue, while the musical guests practice their songs and the production team plays games. The audience is not permitted on the soundstage while this is taking place. It means that if the rehearsals last longer than intended, audience members may have to sit outside for a longer period of time.
