Uncovering the Ship
Archaeologists later discovered that the ship was likely sailed by servants about 2500 BC and transported to a pit in the Great Pyramid. They speculated that it was intended for Pharaoh Khufu to sail into his afterlife, which was a popular idea in ancient Egyptian civilization. The boat’s goal was to transport the king to his endless trip with Ra, the Egyptian sun god, following his death. However, not everyone agreed with this viewpoint.

The Theory Sinks
Some hypotheses believe that the ship’s function was not to transport the Pharaoh to his afterlife, citing indications that the ship had previously been in the water. Historians speculated that the ship was used to bring the king’s mummified body to his grave, although there were other theories as well. One of them stated that Khufu used the ship during his lifetime to visit Egyptian religious sites. The ship remains one of Egyptology’s most remarkable discoveries, but it raised more problems than it answered. Fortunately, a game-changing piece of evidence was discovered not long after.
