Thomas was home one day, on one of the rare afternoons when he didn’t have a shift at the shop, when he heard a crash in the kitchen. He dashed down the stairs and discovered his mother motionless on the ground. He dashed over to her, yelling at her to get up. He then dialed 911 and waited for an ambulance to transport her to the hospital. Nobody else was home that day, so Thomas sat next to his mother, stroking her hair, wondering what would happen next. When the paramedics arrived and urged him to get in the back as they drove to the hospital, he scarcely registered.

Throughout the next two days, while his father walked in the hallway and Zachary sobbed in the corner, Thomas remained alert and inquisitive, asking every doctor and nurse who came in to explain what they were doing and what it meant. They were in the hospital for three days as physicians performed tests and operations to determine what had happened to Sarah Collins. She was asleep for the whole of her stay, although her heart monitor remained stable until the third day.
