Kayla and Erica sat in tense suspense, each minute seeming longer than the last. Kayla fidgeted, looking at the reception desk and then at the box. Erica wrapped her arm around her, hoping to provide some comfort. They both jumped slightly every time the door to the vet’s office opened, hoping it was their turn to learn the truth about their mysterious find.

Eventually, their names were called. The room was silent for a time as all eyes focused on them. Kayla stood up, clutching the box securely, her heart racing with a combination of terror and hope. Erica gave her a comforting nod as they moved towards the vet’s office, the door closing behind them, drowning out the voices and eyes in the waiting area.
