Although Clapton’s grief at Conor’s death was understandable, the fact that he was reared without a mother or father may have added to his pain. In 1944, Clapton’s father, Edward Fryer, a Canadian soldier, went out with Clapton’s mother, Pat Clapton, for a night of fun and relaxation. When Pat, on the other hand, was 15, she had no intention of becoming a mother because she was still too young. Clapton’s mother, you see, left the United States when he was a toddler to live with another man in Canada.

As a result of this, Clapton grew up believing that his grandmother Rose was his mother. And when Pat showed up, as she did on occasion, he mistook her for an older sister, leading him to believe she was. Clapton, on the other hand, was clearly troubled by his father’s absence, as seen by his song “My Father’s Eyes” which he dedicated to Fryer in 1988.
