While Louisa looked for work, the two stayed with a friend. Fortunately, she soon got work at a neighborhood diner. She only wanted to find a suitable place to live that would keep her daughter secure. But she had no idea how terrible things would turn out to be.

Something weird happened while Louisa stood in front of the real estate firm, contemplating her next move. Louisa had reached her breaking point. She had looked at a lot of houses, but they were either too expensive or not what she was looking for. She was about to go when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

She turned around to see an elderly face. An old woman with piercing blue eyes and wispy white hair looked at her. She inquired whether she might assist the lady. “Looking for a house?” she asked flatly. She scurried away as quickly as she appeared, handing Louisa a piece of paper.

Louisa quickly opened the piece of paper and was surprised to see a photo of a beautiful detached property. Then she saw the asking price for this house: zero dollars. Why was this house free? It sounded ideal, with three bedrooms, two baths, a spacious kitchen, and a massive lawn! But Louisa soon discovered that this house was far from perfect.

Underneath the image was a cellphone number, and Louisa pondered what to do for a brief period. Was there a reason this house wasn’t on the market? Should she even seek to advice from a stranger? She pushed her thoughts aside and took out her phone. She phoned the number, excited and nervous at the same time. But Louisa had no idea how much she would come to regret calling this phone.

After nearly a minute of waiting, the phone finally rang, and Louisa heard “hello” in her ear. Louisa introduced herself swiftly and stated that she was interested in the house she had seen. The seller, Mikey, was overjoyed to learn of Louisa’s interest in the property. Louisa agreed after he requested she come over right away. She didn’t have anything to lose. But she would soon understand she had.

Louisa was already feeling butterflies in her stomach as she drove to the house’s address. The drive was long, and the house was further away than she had intended, but she didn’t mind. When she pulled up, Louisa was utterly taken aback by how large the house was in person. Louisa had already been sold. “What could possibly be wrong with this?” She mumbled quietly to herself. But Louisa was about to find out.

As Louisa approached the house, she noticed a man standing in front of it. Louisa stepped out, and the man rushed over, a huge smile on his face. “You must be Louisa; my name is Mikey,” the man explained. Mikey quickly began the tour of the house once they were introduced. Louisa stepped inside her probable new house, not understanding what was in store for her.

Louisa delighted in the thrill as she walked around the house. She could immediately see her daughter playing in the backyard and herself preparing cookies in the beautiful Victorian kitchen. Louisa could tell Mikey was enjoying her excitement and optimism for this house because he was accompanying her. Perhaps he was simply pleased for her. But Louisa had no idea what Mikey was up to.

Louisa was convinced she was making the proper selection after inspecting every room in the house. But she had no idea she was making a tremendous mistake.

Mikey’s face turned as white as a ghost as soon as Louisa said it. He sounded as if he’d just heard something very awful.

Louisa, perplexed, inquired as to what was wrong. But then she noticed something in the corner of the room. It was a portrait of an elderly woman that was displayed on the wall. Mikey’s grandmother had called. Mikey’s grandmother has died. It was the same old lady who had shown Louisa this place a few hours before. Louisa sat frozen in place, an awful feeling in the pit of her stomach.

Louisa didn’t know what to do; she just wanted to get out of this house as quickly as possible. But she was also looking for answers. “What’s going on, Mikey?” She inquired. Mikey stared at her and began to tell her the truth.

You see, the reason this house was free was that many people said it was haunted. Many people claim Mikey’s grandma Adele’s ghost haunts the halls. Mikey had never noticed anything out of the norm, but he also made an effort to remain as far away from this property as possible. Louisa, how about you? Was this house still the abode of her dreams, knowing all of this?

When Louisa discovered the reality, she opted not to continue living there. Normally, she didn’t believe in the paranormal, but after seeing the old woman, named Adele, she changed her mind. She was able to find a smaller two-bedroom property instead. But Louisa was unconcerned. After all, wouldn’t you prefer a ghost lodger to one less bedroom?
