Shortly after Chappells Limited ceased operations, the Bethlehem Steel Company took over, and Gilbert Hedden became the new enthusiast in charge of the Money Pit. He was certain that the treasure had been left on the island in the first place by the notorious pirate William Kidd. A few years later, Hedden made the purchase that allowed him to begin a full-fledged excavation on the island. He also hired a pumping company to get the job done. The year after that, Hedden traveled to Oak Island, taking everything he needed with him and leaving nothing to chance. Nevertheless, to what end?

Gilbert Hedden was in a position where the lack of substantial findings didn’t justify the enormous financial investment that he was putting into the project.
