Wahlberg had appeared in a few films prior to this and was undoubtedly a familiar face, but Fear was his opportunity to make a name for himself as an actor. In this twisted psychological thriller, which also starred a teenage Reese Witherspoon, he accomplished precisely that. The way we view rollercoasters has never been the same since.

Wahlberg, who has recently become quite religious, has expressed his distaste with Boogie Nights. This is a whirling, bravura film from Paul Thomas Anderson, and we feel no such remorse. This movie, which related to the adult cinema industry but is more of a searing drama about the lives of the people involved, is led by Wahlberg and a fantastic ensemble.
