Erica was the one to enter through the front door because Monica had decided to stay in her room this time. Then Monica had some second thoughts about approaching her daughter, and instead of doing so, she found herself observing the situation.

While lowering her headlights, Monica peered out the window of her apartment, which looked out over the parking spaces below. She did this so that she wouldn’t startle Erica. She watched as her daughter approached the vehicle in a cautious manner, evidently taking great care not to trigger the street sensor lights as she did so.
