Making Progress
General Dynamics Electric Boat was chosen as the prime contractor and main design yard by the Navy in March 2016. In fact, Electric Boat was in charge of building all 18 Ohio-class submarines. While Electric Boat will be in charge of the majority of the work on the 12 new submarines, Newport News Shipbuilding of Huntington Ingalls Industries will be the key subcontractor, assisting with design and construction. They will be in charge of 22 to 23 percent of the job.
Hiring Employees
The hiring process has begun by the end of 2016. Electric Boat alone engaged around 3,000 workers to begin the project’s design phase. The first submarine was scheduled to be completed in 2021. The first submarine is scheduled to be finished in 2030, with service starting in 2031. By 2042, all 12 submarines are projected to be finished.
