Katie Holmes filed for divorce in New York to gain sole custody
Katie tried to get away from the Church of Scientology by divorcing Tom Cruise. But divorcing Suri wouldn’t ensure she wouldn’t have all of her worries about her disappear. She had to make sure she had exclusive custody if she really wanted to protect her kid from Cruise’s religion. So she went to New York to petition for divorce. Holmes chose to be divorced here even though he lives in California because joint custody was not likely to be awarded in this case. When there is conflict between the parents, it appears that the state prefers to provide exclusive custody to one of them. Although there was no assurance Katie would get her desired result, this was her greatest opportunity for success.
The divorce was finalized quickly and resulted in sole custody for Katie
Numerous high-profile divorces have been known to drag on for months or even years as each party tries to acquire what they want from the breakup. Not with Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, though. It looks like it took them less than two weeks to complete the paperwork and dissolve their six-year marriage. One noteworthy result of the divorce was that Katie appeared to have gotten her wish about Suri’s custody. The six-year-old would be raised by her mother and only have visiting privileges with her father. Tom was supposed to visit her up to 10 days a month, but that’s not what actually happened.
