Being a well-known athlete puts one in the spotlight, and the media often invents scandals involving public figures. Nadia was just like everyone else in this regard. An affair between Nadia and Nicu Ceausescu, son of the infamous Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, was the subject of one of these rumors. Her credibility as a professional athlete was being eroded by these rumors. The press kept spreading these falsehoods despite the obvious falsity of the stories they were reporting on.

Nadia’s performance at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow was negatively impacted by all of this drama. Despite her not-quite-perfect performance, she still managed to bring home four medals in the end (two gold and two silver). Her coach, Béla, was furious with the judges’ scores because she hadn’t even come close to matching her Olympic performance from four years ago. His life became extremely difficult in Romania after footage of him ranting and raving on camera about how much he hated Jews was broadcast nationally. Authorities in Romania were upset by his remarks and felt he had given an inaccurate portrayal of the country.
