She Gained Weight

Because gymnastics calls for a small and nimble body, and Nadia started gaining height and weight as she hit puberty, the Romanian government and the public urged her to quit gymnastics. Although she could have given up her career, Nadia chose to return to competition despite the calls she had received. As she trained for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, she brought home a number of medals for her country. She seemed intent on never being defeated, regardless of her physical condition.
