Her Plans

Nadia did not tell anyone about her plan of escape. She cared deeply for her loved ones, but she knew that if she told them, they would try to stop her, or even worse, they would alert the Romanian government to her betrayal. The only people who knew what she was up to were her younger brother and his wife, and they were totally on board with everything she was doing. Nadia and Constantin’s escape plan had her brother’s approval. After her brother did some investigating, he discovered that Constantin was sincere in his desire to help get young Nadia out of the country, calming her fears.

Nadia made it to the Hungarian border despite the odds and the severe winter conditions. In contrast to other communist countries, Hungary was relatively lenient toward her, so instead of arresting and deporting her, they brought her a blanket and some hot drinks. After that, she was delivered to the Austrian embassy without incident. Her story was well-known, and the Austrians were able to bring her to Vienna. There she encountered the mysterious Constantin Panait, who would ultimately save her life. To escape their problems, they took a flight to New York together.
