Trapped In Her Own Country
Nadia’s decision to move back to Romania was fraught with consequences. Since Béla had already defected, the Romanian government was worried that she might follow suit. So the government sent in big guns to keep an eye on her. All of her communications were monitored, including phone calls, mail, and attempts to travel to the West. As the government continued to meddle in her personal life, she had a harder and harder time of it. No one in her own country believed her anymore, and she was effectively imprisoned there.
She Escaped
Nadia quickly realized that she did not belong in this environment. It was becoming increasingly clear to her that remaining in Romania presented an unacceptable risk to her safety. She managed to get in touch with a Romanian nationalist and anti-communist who had made it to Florida despite the government’s constant surveillance. Constantin Panait was his name, and he was this person. Only he could get her to America, and he had promised to do so. It was dangerous, but she had to take the chance because of how bad her situation had gotten in Romania.
