Nadia ’81

Romania’s communist regime was having financial difficulties in 1981, so they held a concert tour featuring the singer Nadia to raise money. People all over the United States were excited to see her on tour and get their picture taken with the gymnastics sensation. Her government received a staggering $250,000 thanks to her rock star status. Even so, the government only compensated her with $1,000 for all of her hard work. Even though this was a sizable sum by Romanian standards at the time, it seemed paltry in light of all that Nadia had accomplished on behalf of her country.

Life In Danger

Béla’s government was constantly hostile toward him because of the accusations he made against the Russians at the Moscow Olympics. His life was in jeopardy several times. All of his whereabouts were monitored by the Romanian secret service, and they never let up. In the wake of the Nadia ’81 tour, Béla and a few others made the decision to defect to the United States. Nadia was not interested in joining them, despite their best efforts. She longed to return to her native Romania.
