She got out
When she reached the front door, she opened it slowly, afraid to make even the tiniest noise. Her in-laws were now just a few feet away from her. Her palms felt clammy, and she had to concentrate on her breathing to relax. She could only run as soon as she stepped outside.
Going home
Lily bolted as quickly as she could, clutching the book in her arms. She didn’t bother closing the door. She dashed out of the street and around the corner to her parked car. She couldn’t breathe again until she was on the freeway, only five minutes from home.
