Aren’t They Dangerous?
Isn’t it true, however, that stingrays are dangerous? According to Helen Cadwallader, a Ph.D. student who has studied stingrays and is also a researcher at the University of Waikato, humans should avoid approaching stingrays at all costs. Let’s check out what else she has to say regarding stingrays.
They Can Be Fatal
When a stingray stings you, you’ll experience immediate, excruciating pain at the wound site. Stingray venom can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction that necessitates immediate medical attention. Expect the surrounding area to swell. The venom of stingrays is killed by hot water, which may relieve the pain associated with the sting. “Stingrays have a spine on their tail that can cause extreme pain and a lot of damage, but they won’t attack,” said Cadwalleder, explaining that “they don’t go out to chase you down and attack, what they do is entirely self-defense.”
