As Esmerelda, the housekeeper, Alice Ghostley appeared in 15 episodes of Bewitched. She was initially recruited to succeed the late Alice Pearce in the role of obnoxious neighbor Mrs. Kravitz. Ghostley had similar worries when she was approached to join the show in the wake of Marion Lorne’s passing because she felt awkward about filling her friend’s shoes. Esmerelda would only be a similar character to Aunt Clara, not a direct replacement, producer Bill Asher reassured her.
