Sean Astin had already established himself in the worlds of real-life film and television, but he still had one more path to pursue: voice-overs. His first voice-over role was in Meerkat Manor, an Animal Planet series in which he narrates the episode. After this brief hiatus, the voice-over work began to pour in. Astin voices the eponymous character in Special Agent Oso, the teenage husky Kodi in Balto III: The Wings of Change, and Raphael in the Nickelodeon animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Sean Astin began his career as a director and co-producer of a short film called Kangaroo Court in 1994, after spending his childhood and teenage years behind the camera. He co-wrote the film with his wife, Christine, and it tells the story of an African-American lawyer defending a white cop kidnapped by a gang. The kicker is that the group is merely aiming to avenge a young boy’s wrongful death. The 29-minute film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live-Action Short Film.
