College is an extremely fun time in life, but it is also very stressful! Being away from home for the first time is nerve-racking and then add in the stress of more difficult courses and exams…ahh!!! Whether you think so or not, your college or university is actually aware of your heightened stress levels, and they’re doing something about it! Public and private schools across the U.S. are bringing therapy dogs to campuses where they hang out and play with stressed-out students. Studies show it actually works! Students are leaving less-stressed than when they came in…score!
Therapy dogs have been around for generations, they’re just now becoming more readily used and popular on college campuses. Besides calming down students, they also bring joy and companionship to the elderly in nursing homes and hospitals. They are even trained to recognize serious disorders like seizures and other major health issues in humans.
Just a few years ago, I received my college degree and I can agree that it was a quite stressful time! I recall seeing a flyer advertising therapy dogs for stressed-out students during finals week, and I couldn’t be happier! I knew that this was the perfect thing to take the edge off. The event ended up being a hit, so much so that they had to extend it three days! I guess I wasn’t the only one who enjoyed petting a therapy dog during a tough week of studying.
People were buzzing about the pups on campus for days, and they were uploading pictures of them as well! What could be better than hanging with a loveable dog after a long day of studying?? Just about nothing! This trend of therapy dogs on campuses is incredible and should exist at every school across the U.S.!
